Maximizing space in the kitchen is a trend that will last. This trend makes use of a corner or even a side wall, creating built-in seating on one side paired with a dining table and a couple of chairs on the other side. There are no rules for how to create a comfortable dining nook — just use cozy furniture like a small sofa or armchairs to encourage lounging. Natural wood cabinets, earthy colors, and ample light are a trend that, when done right, can lend a comfortable and easy vibe to your kitchen. For years, stainless steel finishes ruled the kitchen appliance world. Now white appliances are back, and they look clean and modern paired with a timeless all-white kitchen design or with cabinets painted mint green, navy blue, or light coral.

Marble has long been used in European kitchens, even though this gorgeous stone can stain and discolor with use. And despite its reputation as high-maintenance, its classic, luxurious look has arrived in many American kitchens. “People like marble for its natural beauty, even though it can show wear and tear over the years,” says expert Michael Bruno, a salesperson with the tile and stone company Ann Sacks. “Every house in Europe has a stone countertop—it’s only in this country that people think everything has to look brand-new.”

When we built our home two years ago, I told the designer that the bathrooms weren’t my first priority. Since we had limited resources and a tight budget, I planned to DIY our bathroom upgrades later, when it was more realistic. Now that time has come. I’ve been focusing on designing a beautiful guest bathroom, and I’ve found some impressive DIY bathroom upgrades that I didn’t realize were possible! Most of them involve very little money, and minimal work. These do-it-yourself bathroom makeovers are perfect as a long-term addition, or even as an inexpensive but stylish revamp to hold you over until you can do a full remodel.

Bold Stone Countertops: According to Katy Kindred, interior designer and co-founder of Kindred Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, “white-on-white with Carrera marble is starting to fade, making way for countertops with new colors and textures.” This helps create a richer, more exciting, and distinct kitchen. Laura Botelho, founder of her namesake design firm in Dallas, Texas, agrees, saying that “granite has been modernized and seems to have shifted from the speckled look to a more organic style with the same reliable qualities.”

Removing original period windows and exterior doors can destroy a period property’s character, and its value, unless they are sympathetically replaced. Authentic replicas are expensive, so always consider repair as a first option. Cheaper, off-the shelf joinery is rarely appropriate and is unlikely to fit the original openings and so will look wrong. If the original external joinery has already been removed, research neighbouring properties or books to find appropriate styles. Avoid modern hybrid products, such as front doors with built-in fanlights. Try and observe the techniques and materials used in the building’s original construction and try and repair, or replace, on a like-for-like basis. Internally, try and preserve original doors, floorboards, fireplaces and plaster mouldings if they are still intact.

All of our work is carried out to the highest standard and we take great pride in the quality of our craftmanship. Every element is carefully considered and designed to function perfectly. We use only the finest materials and state-of-the-art technology. Our kitchens are completed to the highest specification and are fitted with cutting-edge appliances from manufactureres such as Gaggenau, Miele, Siemans, Quooker, Westin, Fisher & Paykel amongst others. Top kitchen countertops services Fort Myers: Granite is excellent for outdoor kitchen countertops and bases due to its heat resistance, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Commercial marble is either metamorphic or sedimentary in composition, made primarily of calcite. Some “marbles” may be a type of quartzite or quartz-based stone, and green “marbles” are made of a mineral called serpentine. Marble is usually characterized by having veins and a smoother surface texture than granite. Like granite, marble ranges from white to black in color and will have some degree of variation in color over its surface. Both marble and granite vary in appearance from slab to slab because the minerals that make up the color of the stone may change depending on where it is cut from.

Sourcing, quarrying and processing natural stone to use as a building material has virtually no impact on the environment, making it a sensible and eco-friendly solution for all of your housing needs. Unlike many other artificial building products, stone is found naturally and requires little energy for its manufacture. Modern techniques for quarrying stones are extremely efficient and help reduce impact. The natural stone releases no chemicals or off-set toxic gasses that can diminish indoor air quality and put the health of you and your family at risk. It absorbs ambient temperature and improves energy efficiency within your home, meaning that it can store heat from the sun or cold air. This makes it easier to maintain a consistent, well-balanced temperature within your home all year round.

Remove stains and etching: When cleaning with mild soap and water doesn’t work, or on areas that are “etched,” you’ll need to take more aggressive action. Step up to a cleanser such as Soft Scrub or even Ajax with bleach, applied with an abrasive sponge. That will remove the sealant and allow you to scrub down to the stain. “When you’re done, you’ll find that the area you’ve worked on looks brighter than the rest of your counter,” says Bruno. “So then you need to go on to clean the rest of the counter the same way. Then rinse it thoroughly and let it dry completely—maybe even for a couple of days. Once it’s dry, pour the penetrating sealant all over the surface and spread it around with a soft cloth.”

Kitchen countertops solutions Fort Myers 2023 by countertopsandmore.org: Undertaking work yourself can allow you to control costs and quality, but don’t be over-ambitious and plan to do more work than you really have time – or the skill – to undertake successfully. You could end up slowing the whole project down and living in a building site for years, which can in turn lead to family conflicts and potentially to accidents. Bad DIY will also cost you dearly, slowing down the other trades, wasting materials, sometimes causing work to be done twice, and ultimately devaluing the property if it is not put right. You can get so tied up in DIY work that you lose focus on running the project and keeping up with decisions.

Patterns are making a huge splash, from penny tile to French pattern. But herringbone will be one of the most popular looks of the year. It’s clean-cut, but still draws the eye and stands out. Consider a white herringbone backsplash with a dark grout color, or get wild with pops of different color tiles set in unpredictable places for a more dynamic look. Either way, expect to be called a trendsetter. See extra info at Countertops and More.

Basically, a frameless kitchen cabinet cost around $5,000 to $15,000. Alternatively, if you are running on a low budget, you can spruce up your kitchen by simply painting already installed cabinets. When the housing market is buoyant there’s usually a high demand for building services, making it hard to find good builders at a reasonable price. It can be tempting to pick the cheapest builder who can start next week, but if a quote price is super-cheap there’s normally a good reason: perhaps they forgot to include something, or simply just got their sums wrong. Either way, the builder will realise they’re working at a loss. And if they walk off the job, it will cost you dearly to get someone else to finish it, with all the hassle that goes with that. It may be cheaper in the long run to go for a medium-range price rather than risk work being skimped to recoup losses, leaving you with a badly done job. If your project is not time critical, employing ‘friends of friends’ or friends on ‘mates’ rates’ may work. But more often than not something else will come up on the day when they promised to finish your job, which could then hold up the following trades.

The durability of the stone you choose is dictated by its makeup. Most marbles are made of calcite, which is a very soft and porous mineral. This means that marble will be more likely to absorb stains and to etch or lose its finish over time. Having a honed, or matte finish, for your marble counter can help disguise some of the etching. However, not all marble is made primarily of calcite. Green marble, made of serpentine, does not etch as easily, but it can spall or flake with prolonged contact with water. Quartzites that are labeled as marble, like Thassos or Azul Celeste, are extremely durable and much harder than some granites.

Our friendly, and courteous staff will be more than happy to assist you with suggestions, answers to your questions, and pricing for the various pieces that will make up your new space. We use a state of the art technique utilizing UV rays that considerably reduce the drying time of a refacing or repainting job. Thereby we can also finish the job much more quickly than other contractors who may not have access to top of the line equipment. This assures that you are getting the finest, fastest, and financially fit service on the market for investment, and once the products have been applied and the service complete, it will be clear that you made the right decision for your home. The quality and care that go into our services are the envy of the industry that is unparalleled by the typical remodeling company. Read more information on kitchen remodel in Fairfax.

We are slowly moving away from the throw-away culture we live in, with minimalism becoming a popular interiors trend and people practicing mindful spending. As a result, homeware woodworking and handmade items are becoming ever more popular and there is definitely a shift in mindset with consumers wanting more unique and bespoke items in their home and making more conscious decisions around what they spend their hard-earned cash on.

Every board is handmade from natural timber, and finished with food safe oil. No two boards are the same, each piece has its own unique grain and characteristics. Any imperfections such as small knots or crevice’s have been carefully filled with food safe epoxy resin. The boards in the photos are an example of what you are likely to receive when purchasing. Made and designed in Australia. Our Premium Camphor Laurel boards produce stunning grains and a beautiful aromatic smell. Because marble slabs are usually smaller than granite slabs, you may need more pieces to complete a full kitchen if using marble. Granite counters range in cost from $40 to $75 a square foot on average. More exotic stones, such as stones colored blue, may range in cost as high as $500 a square foot. For a 30-square-foot counter, the average material cost is around $1,000 to $1,500. Fabrication and labor add around $330 to the cost of the stone, a sink cutout adds another $100, and edging adds about $10 a linear foot on average. This makes the 30-square-foot granite counter cost between $3,000 and $3,500 installed. Fabrication, installation, cutout, and edging costs for marble are around the same cost. Material costs for marble are higher, starting at around $60 a square foot and going as high as $100. This makes the material costs for a marble counter of the same size between $1,800 and $3,000 making the total range $3,800 to $5,000 on average.

I love the look of light tile and dark grout, but when we built I had everything put in white on white. Staining the grout dark is a simple and easy way to mimic the modern, international look of classic subway tile. I’ve done this at our home, and loved the results. I had no idea that there were so many simple yet dramatic DIY bathroom upgrades besides the standard switching textiles and painting the walls. These do-it-yourself projects make a big impact by upgrading the fixtures, hardware, and whole landscape of the bathroom—you can even do all five in just one weekend!

Applications: The durable quality of granite makes it appropriate for kitchen countertops and hallways where there is high foot activity while marble is more apt for areas where there is less traffic like bathrooms. Marble gives a bright unique look and is suitable for surfaces that are used less frequently. Cost: Granite and marble both are to be installed by professionals as the slabs are really heavy. The approximate cost for both marble and granite is $50 to $100 however high end granite is cheaper than its counterpart marble. The actual price however depends on the quality of the stone, complexity of the job and the style of the tiles.

“I’ve had people say, “Why does my marble countertop already look horrible only three months after it was installed?’ ” says Bruno. “I ask them what cleansers they’re using, or tell them to ask their cleaning person or their husband. If it’s something abrasive, they’re stripping away the sealant and leaving the stone wide open to stains.” But stains aren’t the only things you have to be concerned about. Marble is also prone to what’s called etching—that is, dull marks on the surface caused by contact with acidic substances. You’d be surprised how many cooking ingredients are acidic—lemon juice, vinegar, tomato sauce; the list goes on. Etching marks can’t just be buffed away; they require more aggressive treatment.

Mosaic tiles rose to popularity a few years ago and are still going strong. However, the mixed square tiles that make for a sort of pixel-y look are less popular nowadays. Rectangular tiles that create more of a subtle, streaked look are more in style. If you want to try something a little more avant-garde, experiment with going vertical rather than horizontal.

So, by now, you know all the properties of both stones. You know the price difference and how their qualities are different. Now for a final selection, you need to consider your project first. If you need a good and affordable design, you can go for marble but if you’re looking for a long term durable solution and can spend some money as well, going for granite and spending on it is not a bad option at all.

Aspiring renovators sometimes get so focused on getting the desired ‘visual result’ with fabulous kitchens, decor and so on, that they risk running out of money for works to the building envelope — sometimes referred to as the ‘unseens’. If you don’t prioritise key works, such as leaking roofs, timber decay and structural movement, it won’t be long before deterioration of the fabric takes hold, at which point it might be a matter of some regret that so much of the budget was showered on top-of-the-range designer appliances.

There’s been quite a bit of buzz about tile in the design world lately. There are more unique options than ever for a sophisticated yet eye-catching backsplash or shower wall. A beautiful tile can complete the look of a room or even function as the main attraction. Here are a few exciting tile trends that may spark some inspiration for your new construction or home makeover.

Among all natural stone marble is the most elegant and luxurious stone. It is also highly versatile as it can be used in flooring, ornamental furnishings, fireplace and bathrooms. Just like any other natural stone marble comes in a variety of colors ranging from milky white to red and black which is the result of impurities present in the stone’s structure. The impurities are in bands which increase the elegance of the stone. However, since marble is made of calcite crystals which is a salt of calcium, marble is prone to staining especially from liquids which are acidic in nature due to which it is usually not recommended to install marble for exposed places like commercial kitchens.

Vanquish stubborn stains. If you can’t remove a stain by yourself, it may be time to call a stone refinisher. “They’ll do a professional cleaning using special grinders, and perhaps fine-grit sandpaper,” says Bruno. But Bruno doesn’t discourage homeowners from using fine sandpaper on a marble countertop themselves. “Don’t worry about hurting your stone,” he says. “If there’s a nick or chip, you can smooth it out with sandpaper. You can also try that on a stain—just remember to reseal the surface when you’re done.” As reassurance, he offers this extreme case: “My wife and I recently bought an antique marble table that had been left outside and actually had algae growing on it. I got all the stains out using an electric sander and some diluted bleach.” Bruno also recommends learning to live with the flaws. “In Italy no one would look at a natural stone countertop and say, ‘Oh no, there’s a stain from a New Year’s Eve party seventeen years ago!’ A little etching and staining is normal wear and tear—it just becomes part of the kitchen.

There’s a certain amount of paranoia among the public when it comes to dealing with builders. The fact is, most builders try to do a decent job, often despite late payment and awkward clients giving them a lot of grief. Individual tradespeople can actually be a mine of valuable experience. Of course, sometimes there’s an ulterior motive to drum up business. But it’s often the case that the person tasked with doing the job will know a better, less expensive or simpler solution in a specific area than designers focused on the bigger picture. Trades also tend to have a useful knowledge of materials and local suppliers, potentially helping you save time and money. So don’t automatically disregard advice from the person doing the job.

There’s a lot you can do on your own for a bathroom remodel, but if you’re touching plumbing or electricity, you will need to hire a professional. A remodel is a great opportunity to assess if your current bathroom is working for you and move outlets to a more convenient location or update plumbing to more efficient versions. Does the layout of the bathroom work for you? It may be easier than you think to freshen the layout of your bathroom without actually making a lot of changes. For example, an easy option is to rip out a linen closet and replace it with cabinets. It’s a big change without the added expense of moving plumbing. And let’s be real about the purpose of a bathroom and not forget the little things, like where is the toilet paper holder going to go? Plan the flow of your bathroom strategically and you’ll avoid any unwanted surprises later on.

Granite is a granular igneous rock which has a phaneritic texture, it is formed by the slow crystallization of the magma under the surface of the earth. Many items that we encounter in our daily activities especially in big cities where pavers, floor tiles and cemetery monuments are made from granite. Many famous places like Mount Rushmore, Yosemite Valley and Torres del Paine in Chile are granite hubs.
